Why do luxury groups own so many brands?
Scale. A group can share real estate, advertising buying power, factories, distribution and talent across its houses, and move designers between them. A strong brand can carry a weaker one through a bad cycle. The model was built by Bernard Arnault at LVMH from 1989 and copied by Kering and Richemont.

- Ralph Lauren: listed, with the Lauren family holding voting control
- Stella McCartney: owned by its founder since she bought back LVMH’s stake in 2025
- Schiaparelli: owned by Diego Della Valle
- Rick Owens, Jacquemus, Elie Saab: founder-led labels

The Ayerhs view
Are conglomerates good for fashion?
They keep heritage houses alive and fund expensive crafts such as couture, but they also push designers towards short-term sales and constant change. The independents, from Chanel to Rick Owens, show that patience is still a competitive advantage.
