The people
Who owns LVMH?
Bernard Arnault, the group’s chairman and chief executive, and his family. In early 2026 his stake passed 50% of the shares, with the family holding about two-thirds of the voting rights. The rest is owned by public shareholders.
How did Bernard Arnault build LVMH?
Arnault, a French businessman who first took over the textile group that owned Christian Dior in the 1980s, gained control of LVMH in 1989. He then bought heritage houses, hired star designers such as John Galliano at Dior and Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton, and grew the group into a global empire through deals including Bulgari (2011) and Tiffany (2021).
Who will run LVMH after Bernard Arnault?
No successor has been named. All five of Arnault’s children hold senior roles in the group, and in 2025 shareholders raised the age limit for the chief executive to 85, allowing him to stay on for several more years.
The Ayerhs view
Why does LVMH matter to fashion?
Because its choices shape the whole industry: who designs the biggest houses, what luxury costs and what the rest of the market copies. Understanding LVMH is the quickest way to understand modern luxury.
