The designer

Who is Rick Owens?

An American designer, born in 1962 in Porterville, California, who studied art in Los Angeles and worked as a pattern-maker before starting his label there in 1994. He showed in New York in 2002, moved to Paris in 2003, and has shown there ever since. He designs everything himself; there has never been another creative director.

Who is Michèle Lamy?

Owens’s wife and longtime creative partner, a French former lawyer, dancer and restaurateur from Los Angeles. She runs the company’s furniture line and is part of its public image, with her gold-capped teeth and tattooed fingers.

What is Rick Owens’s style?

Dark, draped and monumental. Owens works mostly in black, dust and grey, with long elongated silhouettes, bias-cut jersey, heavy leather and towering platform boots. He has called it “glunge”, a mix of glamour and grunge, and his shows lean on architecture, ritual and the body.

Is Rick Owens an independent label?

The Ayerhs view

Why does Rick Owens matter?

Because he is proof that a designer can build a complete world without a conglomerate behind him. Over more than a decade of Ayerhs reviews his vision has barely wavered, yet each season still finds something new in sensuality, architecture and raw drama.
