The designer
Who is Thom Browne?
An American designer, born in Pennsylvania in 1965, who started his label in New York in 2001 with a handful of made-to-measure suits. He has since become one of America’s best-known designers and chairman of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).
What is the Thom Browne suit?
A grey suit cut deliberately small: a short, tight jacket and cropped trousers that show the ankle. It challenged the baggy suits of the time and became his uniform, along with the red, white and blue grosgrain tab and the four-bar stripe on the sleeve.
Who owns Thom Browne?
The Italian Zegna Group, which bought a majority stake in 2018. Browne remains creative director.

Why are Thom Browne shows so theatrical?
Each show is a story, with sets and characters: teddy bears and toys for Fall 2022, a little bird for Fall 2025, an alien invasion for Spring 2026. As Ayerhs put it, nobody commits to their world like Thom Browne.
| Season | The idea | Review |
|---|---|---|
| Fall 2022 | Teddy and his toy story | Review |
| Couture Fall 2023 | Grayscale couture, his first couture show | Review |
| Fall 2025 | A little bird told me | Review |

The Ayerhs view
Why does Thom Browne matter?
Because he built a whole universe from one grey suit. In an industry of constant change, his discipline and world-building are a lesson in what a signature really is.
