Every new year brings a fresh round of “in and out” lists, and most are based on little more than personal taste. This one is different. Every item below is based on what designers actually showed on the Spring/Summer 2027 runways in New York, London, Milan and Paris, and on the forecasts that shaped them. That doesn’t mean you have to throw anything away. Fashion is cyclical, and a few of these will be back sooner than you think. But if you want to know which fashion trends are out in 2027, and exactly what is replacing them, here is the list.
A note before we start: “out” here means out of the spotlight, not banned. If you love something on this list, keep wearing it. Personal style always wins over trends, and 2027, more than most years, is about dressing like yourself.
1. Out: quiet luxury. In: gold, gloss and joy
For years, the most fashionable look was beige cashmere, no logos and no shine. Spring 2027 ended that. Anthony Vaccarello’s final Saint Laurent show was almost entirely gold, and metallics, sequins and embellishment appeared across every fashion capital. The idea behind quiet luxury, buying fewer, better things, is stronger than ever, but the look itself now feels dated. 2. Out: the ballet flat. In: brogues and derbies
The ballet flat has been the default fashionable flat for several years. For 2027, Altuzarra, Celine, Ralph Lauren, Bottega Veneta and Erdem all moved to polished, menswear-inspired lace-ups: brogues, derbies and oxfords. They look sharper with the season’s skirts and tailoring, and they suit the return of preppy dressing.
3. Out: minimal sandals. In: jewelled shoes
The barely-there strappy sandal is giving way to shoes with something to say. Prada, Chanel, Dries Van Noten and Tory Burch showed heels covered in beading and floral appliqué, and Saint Laurent added brooches and gold chains to its stilettos. A decorated shoe is now the fastest way to make an outfit feel current.
4. Out: oversized everything. In: the defined waist
Huge blazers, slouchy trousers and boxy shapes ruled for years. Forecasters now agree that the waist is coming back, through wide belts, double belts, corsetry and peplums. On the Spring 2027 runways, statement belts appeared at Altuzarra, Celine and Ferragamo, and in bridal the corset is replacing the traditional blouse. Volume is not disappearing, but it is being anchored at the waist.
5. Out: wide-leg everything. In: the skirt
After seasons dominated by wide-leg trousers and barrel jeans, the skirt is the defining piece of 2027. Prada put a skirt in almost every look, and Chanel, Dior, Miu Miu, Loewe and many more followed. The knee-length skirt is the easiest place to start. Our guide to the skirt trend covers every shape.
6. Out: the giant clutch. In: the slim envelope
Oversized, slouchy pouch clutches have been everywhere for several seasons. For 2027, Celine, Chanel and Bottega Veneta replaced them with slim, flat envelopes and folios. They are more elegant, easier to carry, and they suit the year’s return to dressing up.
7. Out: logo-free beige totes. In: collectible bags
The plain “stealth wealth” tote is losing its appeal. In its place: bags that look like heirlooms, covered in embroidery, beading and fringe, at Chanel, Fendi and Tory Burch, and revived archive icons such as the Proenza Schouler PS1, Gucci GG Marmont, Fendi Baguette and Hermès Bolide.
8. Out: safe, matching outfits. In: clashing on purpose
Neatly coordinated outfits in one tone feel less fresh for 2027. One of the most talked-about looks of the season, at Chanel, combined three mismatched prints and seven colours, while Prada paired clashing florals. Dries Van Noten, Burberry and Celine leaned in too. The new rule: mix prints and colours confidently, as long as it looks like a choice.
9. Out: pale neutrals. In: saturated colour
After years of soft whites, butters and beiges, colour is back. WGSN named Luminous Blue its colour of the year for 2027, alongside Energy Orange, Pop Pink, Meadowland Green and Clay. Orange broke out in Paris at Hermès, Chanel, Loewe and Mugler. If you only add one new thing to your wardrobe in 2027, make it a strong colour. Our Spring 2027 colour guide has the full palette.
10. Out: streetwear as the default. In: elegance
Hoodies and trainers dominated fashion for most of a decade. Several forecasters now see that era ending, with a shift towards tailoring, more formal dressing and pieces that feel like an occasion. On the runways, evening jackets worn with jeans, polished lace-up shoes and skirt suits pointed the same way. You can still wear your trainers; they are just no longer the most fashionable thing in the room.
11. Out: fast, disposable trends. In: craft and keeping
The biggest “out” of 2027 is not a garment but a habit: buying cheap pieces to wear once. Forecasters describe consumers who want to buy less but better, and resale is growing far faster than new fashion. On the runways, Chloé, Khaite, Bottega Veneta and The Row celebrated handwork and craft. In 2027, the most fashionable thing you can own is something made well enough to keep.
What’s staying in
Not everything is changing. Good tailoring, straight-leg jeans, the white shirt, bows on shoes and the bowling bag all carry on into 2027. Lingerie dressing continues too, though in a more grown-up way, with bra tops worn under open blazers and with long skirts; see Bares and Bands. And in Indian wear, heavy silk sarees and red bridal looks remain the constants that every new trend is measured against.
How to update your wardrobe for 2027 without starting over
- Add a skirt. A knee-length skirt instantly updates the tops and jackets you already own.
- Add a belt. A wide belt brings your oversized blazers and dresses into 2027 by defining the waist.
- Change your shoes. A pair of brogues or jewelled heels does more for an outfit than any new dress.
- Add one colour. Blue or orange in a knit, a bag or a coat.
- Bring back an old favourite. If you have an archive bag, now is the time to carry it again.
Out in 2027: frequently asked questions
Is quiet luxury out in 2027?
As a look, yes. The Spring 2027 runways moved to gold, colour and embellishment. The idea of buying fewer, better things remains very much in.
Are wide-leg trousers out in 2027?
They are not gone, but the skirt has taken over as the key piece. For dressier occasions, statement party trousers in satin, sequins or leather are the trouser to have.
Are ballet flats out?
They are no longer the trend flat. Polished brogues, derbies and oxfords replaced them on the Spring 2027 runways.
What colours are out for 2027?
Head-to-toe beige and very pale neutrals feel less current. Strong colours, led by Luminous Blue and orange, are taking their place.
