Every year has a mood, and 2027’s is already clear. After several seasons of beige restraint and “quiet luxury”, the Spring/Summer 2027 collections shown in New York, London, Milan and Paris between September and early October swung hard in the other direction: towards colour, shine, craft, personality and fun. Designers seemed less interested in telling everyone to wear the same thing than in giving people permission to dress like themselves. This is our complete guide to the fashion trends of 2027: what they are, where they came from, and how to actually wear them.
The mood of 2027 in one sentence
Minimalism is over; individuality is in. Forecasters at WGSN describe the defining theme of 2027 as “interconnectedness between polarities”: joy and seriousness, nature and technology, the ancient and the modern held together rather than resolved. On the runways that translated into collections that mixed prints, eras and moods freely, and into a renewed appetite for clothes that feel special, handmade and worth keeping. The age of the algorithm-approved uniform is ending.
1. The season of the skirt
If one garment defines 2027, it is the skirt. Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons built their Spring 2027 Prada show around a skirt in nearly every look, with Mrs Prada comparing the skirt to a T-shirt: a basic you can load with ideas. Chanel, Dior, Miu Miu, Loewe, Khaite, Jil Sander and Altuzarra followed. The most wearable shape is knee-length, but sheer “naked” skirts, embellished pencils and bubble volumes all featured. Our deep dive, The Great Skirt Renaissance, covers every key shape.
2. Gold, gloss and the end of quiet luxury
Anthony Vaccarello’s final show for Saint Laurent after a decade at the house was almost entirely gold, and it set the tone for a season that rediscovered shine. Ralph Lauren, Dries Van Noten and Fforme also explored metallics, while sequins, lamé and high-shine leather appeared everywhere from Paris to New York. 3. Clashing prints, on purpose
One of the most-discussed looks of the season, at Chanel, combined three mismatched prints and seven colours. Prada paired loud florals with louder florals; Dries Van Noten, Burberry and Celine followed suit. The 2027 rule for print is that there are no rules, as long as the result looks chosen rather than accidental. A good way in: keep the scale of the prints different, or keep one colour running through them.
4. Craft you can see
As prices for designer clothing keep climbing, the runways argued that luxury should look and feel handmade. Chloé, Khaite, Bottega Veneta, The Row and Heirlome showed open-work blouses, crochet skirts, beading and embroidery that celebrate the hand of the maker. Trend forecasters connect this directly to AI: in a world of machine-polished images, visible imperfection and craft become the most desirable signal of quality. For shoppers, it means investing in fewer, more special pieces.
5. The bra as a top
Khaite opened its show with a white cone bra and a leather column skirt; Prada styled bras with printed knee-length skirts; Fendi, Tom Ford and Givenchy followed. Lingerie dressing has been around for years, but for 2027 it grew up, worn with tailoring and long skirts rather than as a party trick. See Bares and Bands for the full trend breakdown.
6. Party trousers
Paris made the case for trousers worth dressing up for. Louis Vuitton layered skirts over silky slacks, Balmain showed sparkly snakeskin-print jeans and tie-up leather trousers, Dior had high-shine pairs, and Stella McCartney printed white denim with palm trees. Plain trousers are not going anywhere, but the statement trouser is 2027’s answer to the party dress.
7. The evening jacket
Designers treated tailored jackets with the craft usually reserved for gowns: a white beaded jacket worn with jeans at Kallmeyer, a fil coupé jacket at Ralph Lauren, an archival chartreuse velvet jacket at Schiaparelli. It is one of the most useful ideas of the year, because one spectacular jacket can make a pair of jeans feel like an occasion.
8. Prep school, redone
Preppy codes returned in both womenswear and menswear. In Paris, Acne Studios showed argyle knits, Dries Van Noten luxe polos, Chanel sharp jackets, and Miu Miu and Vivienne Westwood plaid separates. In the men’s shows, polos came in sorbet colours and blazers were worn with sweaters tied over the shoulders. The 2027 version is brighter and looser than the classic, with more personality and less rule-following.
9. Lightness: chiffon, organza and trailing hems
Not everything was loud. Balancing the gold and the clash was a softer story of airy fabrics in pale pink, yellow and green. Chanel, Balenciaga and Ralph Lauren showed hemlines that trailed behind models like tails, and Jonathan Anderson’s Dior offered delicate chiffon skirt suits. If maximalism is not for you, this is your trend.
The colours of 2027
WGSN and Coloro named Luminous Blue as their colour of the year for 2027, supported by Energy Orange, Pop Pink, Meadowland Green and Clay. On the runways, orange was the breakout hue in Paris, at Hermès, Chanel, Loewe and Mugler, while sea-glass shades of mint, aqua and seafoam appeared at Chanel, Dior, Ralph Lauren and Valentino. Pantone’s New York report adds deep reds, a vivid lime and a herbal lavender. Our guide to Spring 2027’s colour theory goes city by city.
Accessories: more is more
- Bags: beaded, embroidered and fringed, plus revivals of archive icons like the Proenza Schouler PS1, Gucci GG Marmont and Hermès Bolide.
- Shoes: jewelled heels, sharp square toes, two-tone cap toes and polished lace-up brogues and derbies replacing the ballet flat.
- Belts: wide, metallic and doubled, at Altuzarra, Celine and Ferragamo. See Motion & Measure for more.
- Jewellery: antique-style chandelier earrings, layered beaded necklaces and floral brooches.
- Scarves: printed silk scarves worn as tops at Hermès and as belts at Ralph Lauren.
The bigger shifts behind the trends
Beyond individual garments, three larger movements will shape how people shop in 2027. First, “buy less, but buy better”: consumers are moving from chasing trends to investing in brands and pieces they trust. Second, the waist is back, after years of oversized silhouettes. Third, streetwear’s long dominance is fading as elegance, tailoring and dressing up return. Together they explain why 2027 feels like a reset rather than a single look.
How to wear 2027’s trends without looking like a mood board
- Pick one statement per outfit. A gold skirt, a beaded jacket or a clashing print, then keep the rest simple.
- Start with a skirt. It is the easiest way into 2027 and works with everything you already own.
- Add one colour. Blue, orange or a sea-glass green will update a neutral wardrobe instantly.
- Buy craft, not quantity. One handmade piece will outlast ten trend-led ones.
