As the sun set behind the Roman landmark, models adorned in Pierpaolo Piccioli’s vivid ethereal couture descended the Spanish Steps while Labrinth performed. Pierpaolo Piccioli paid homage to the brand’s 63-year history with a sprawling 103-look collection titled “Valentino The Beginning,” presented on the Spanish Steps. The Italian sunsets and the beautiful Spanish architecture served as the perfect backdrop.

The opening look, a bouncy dance dress with a skirt of silk roses, was inspired by Valentino’s first use of the famous Valentino red in 1959. There were a plethora of elements present, including velvety feathers, enormous roses, flowing sheer fabrics, lux fur, statement bows, shimmering sequins, and voluminous ruffles. Plus, the Phillip Treacy headpieces were a true work of art. The array of colors used in the palette was stunning, featuring magnificent shades of magenta, lime green, violet, teal, bright cyan, deep red, and countless shades of pink. Piccioli’s wish to democratize fashion was also evident in the inclusive casting. Although the number of looks could have been reduced slightly to give each piece the attention it deserved.

Valentino, a quintessential Italian brand, fearlessly embraces grand gestures and celebrates the city’s Alta Moda heritage. This collection is a tribute to both the past and the future, showcasing the skill of the designer and Valentino atelier. Piccioli stands out by impressing with both technique and inspiration, rather than simply showcasing craftsmanship or historical revival. While he often manages to resurrect the golden-age of couture, he leaves us breathless too. Pierpaolo Piccioli truly outdid himself.
