How is the business of art different from fashion?

Art usually sells unique works or small editions through galleries and auctions, and value can grow over time. Fashion sells many copies of a design each season through stores, and most pieces lose value once worn. Luxury fashion borrows art’s language of rarity to protect its prices.

Is fashion sold at auction like art?

Increasingly, yes. Sotheby’s and Christie’s hold regular handbag and fashion sales, and rare Hermès bags sell for record sums: the original Birkin made for Jane Birkin sold in 2025 for about €8.6 million. Archive pieces from designers like McQueen and Margiela are now collected as art.

What is the aesthetic economy?

The idea that taste and appearance have become products in themselves: brands, interiors, social feeds and clothes are designed to look “art-like” because that look sells.
