The money
How do luxury companies make money?
Mostly from leather goods, accessories and beauty, not from clothes. Runway collections and couture create the image; handbags, small leather goods, shoes, perfume, make-up and sunglasses bring in most of the profit.
| Category | Role in the business |
|---|---|
| Leather goods (bags, wallets) | The biggest profit engine: high prices, high margins, little sizing or seasonal risk |
| Ready-to-wear | Builds the image; lower margins and more stock risk |
| Shoes and accessories | Strong sellers and an easier entry point |
| Perfume and beauty | The most affordable way in, sold in huge volumes, often through licences |
| Eyewear | Mass-volume entry product, usually made by specialists |
| Jewellery and watches | Long-lasting, high-value; the core of Richemont and growing at LVMH |
| Haute couture | Rarely profitable; it sells the dream |

Why are handbags so profitable?
A bag has no sizes, can sell for years without changing, and carries a price many times its production cost. Iconic models such as the Chanel Classic Flap or Louis Vuitton Speedy are sold season after season with little design or marketing cost.

Why does perfume matter so much?
Perfume lets millions of people buy into a brand they could never afford in clothes. Chanel N°5 has been one of the house’s most important products for a century, and fragrance groups such as Puig, Coty and L’Oréal build large businesses from designer names.

What is the difference between retail and wholesale?
Retail means selling directly to customers through a brand’s own stores and website, keeping the full price and controlling the experience. Wholesale means selling to department stores and boutiques at a discount. Over the past two decades most big luxury houses have shifted towards their own stores.
Do luxury brands make everything themselves?
No. Many license their names for perfume, beauty and eyewear to specialist companies in exchange for royalties.

So do the clothes still matter?
Absolutely. Without creative, exciting clothes there is no dream to sell, and the bags and perfume stop selling too. The runway is where a house’s value is created, even if it is banked elsewhere.
