Beautiful, Touching and Glorious; The only way to describe the tribute to Alber Elbaz by his brainchild AZ Factory. Titled “Love Brings Love” and held at The Carreau du Temple in Paris, 45 designers came together to honor the work and life of the beloved designer and his striking influence on fashion. Dries van Noten, Olivier Rousteing, Iris van Herpen, Pierpaolo Piccioli, Maria Grazia Chiuri, Raf Simons, Jean Paul Gaultier, Rick Owens, Virgil Abloh, Christopher John Rogers, Sarah Burton, Demna Gvasalia among many. The runway presentation was inspired by Théâtre de la Mode, an exhibit that showcased the work of 60 designers to help revive the French fashion industry after World War II. A concept Elbaz wanted to explore while celebrating love, beauty, and hope.
The collection opened with a signature look by the AZ Factory design team. Then the designers showcased their tributes in alphabetical order. We saw some classic Elbaz silhouettes and reinterpretations of some memorable looks; elements like pink, hearts and bows were a constant. Pieter Mulier’s Alaia has a pink sheer bodycon dress while Demna’s Balenciaga presented a voluminous pink look with a signature Elbaz bow. There were multiple interpretations of Elbaz himself seen in looks by Olivier’s Balmain, Dries Van Noten, Bruno Sialelli’s Lanvin (quite a lovely look), Ralph Lauren and Rosie Assoulin. That one-shoulder green dress from Lanvin SS08 was referenced beautifully by Virgil Abloh and Pierpaolo Piccioli. His legendary work at Lanvin was summed up perfectly by the current creative director Bruno Sialelli in a white floating dress with Elbaz’s portrait on the train (a reference to Lanvin SS07). Alessandro Michele’s Gucci showed a purple dress with heart motifs over the breasts – reminiscent of Elbaz’s sexual, powerful yet grounded aesthetic. Rick Owens presented a dreamy salmon pink hooded gown that depicted nothing but love. Jean Paul Gautier blessed us with 3D red hearts pouring out of the dress. Thom Browne had a puffer grey look with a bow whereas Tomo Koizumi switched up Lanvin’s ruffles for tulle. Surprisingly Maria Grazia’s Dior look was quite nice and while Viktor and Rolf didn’t present an original look it was quite fitting.
AZ Factory’s design team presented a majestic array of looks; each one a tribute to Elbaz’s iconic designs. Amber Valletta wearing a black coat with sequined motifs of Elbaz’s looks closing the show was a delicately heartfelt moment; Let me tell you I was deep in tears towards the end and Valletta’s embodiment of Elbaz’s tilt-bow simply pierced through my heart.
A magnificent moment for fashion that reviewed a sense of community and love which only Alber Elbaz can do. A collaborative effort that brought in fashion and creativity; we saw a rare moment of true harmony and admiration in the fashion industry. Oh, how he would have loved this! Love did bring in Love.
