Growing up in Turkey in the 70s Chalayan asked his mother as a child what would she take with her when she had to leave her home, she said some photographs, a blanket and favorite clothes. This inspired the collection; when refugees are forced to leave their homes and take what they can carry.

The most innovative and forward-thinking designer in fashion: Hussien Chalayan. Probably the most immersive and sensational shows ever was his Fall 2000 ‘After Words’. Even after 2 decades later the continues to be an iconic fashion moment, a show that challenged what we thought we knew about fashion. “I feared things going wrong, but the risk was so worth taking,” he said just after the show. Thank god he did.

The show opened with a family of 5 sitting in an eerie living room. The setup was a living room filled with nothing but a few staples and emptiness. The Bulgarian folk music playing gave a rather dystopian background. Then came an artfully constructed black coat dress with stark white piping; Many similar looks followed. The simple looks with contrasting piping aimed to explore the Line and the Depth(line being piping and depth being layers). This further enhanced the volume and silhouette of each garment. The collection consisted of rather simple clothes in Classic Chalayan style; meaningful and modest.

A blue dress came in, cleanly cut from concentrated tulle. The construction of this dress was immaculate. More clothes followed, all carried with them a sense of reality and roughness but didn’t compromise on chicness. Hair shaped into intriguing structures with blush-laden makeup was delightfully weird, point to note there were clear plastic patches on the model’s faces. Three rather fancy black cocktail dresses towards the end represented an omen. Then came the disruption.

Four women came in wearing pale grey dresses; they begin taking off the chair covers. Seamlessly they wore the chair covers which had now transformed into sophisticated shift dresses, the crowd cheered. The four models stand in still, some men come and re-construct the wooden chairs into suitcases and place them next to the models. The crowd cheered again. A model slowly walks in towards the mahogany coffee table, removes a lid-like piece from the center of the table and stands inside the hollow space. She pulls up the table and it transforms into a skirt, yes a skirt. The model then walked wearing a piece of furniture to close the show.

Needless to say, the show is an enchanting piece of magic.
