On another mundane day in this endless lockdown, I decided to make myself feel better by scrolling through fashion shows and ended up once again staring and obsessing over Dior Couture by John Galliano.

John Galliano has been the creative director for Givenchy, Christian Dior, and his label John Galliano. At present, Galliano is the creative director of Maison Margiela. “I have a very haute couture way of working.” John Galliano said it sometime and it is probably my favorite quote ever. His couture was all about spectacle, drama, and fantasy. It’s a world to get lost in and dream for.

I have a special place in my heart for extravagant, wild, and over-the-top fashion and John Galliano is one of the best, he should ideally hold a significant place in my perception of Dior. But the thing is when I think Dior I never think of Galliano but just his work as a separate entity. That era was something else, Galliano was instrumental in my perception of Dior.

His work was certainly brilliant and he might have continued at Dior for a while if it wasn’t for his infamous outburst of anti-Semitic comments. He was unquestionably a problematic person and said some shitty things. But he was also a creative genius, his work was magnificent and marvelous. Bernard Arnault, the CEO of LVMH once said “He has the same extraordinary mixture of romanticism, feminism, and modernity” while comparing Galliano to Christian Dior.
In the introduction to John Galliano for Dior V&A’s curator of modern textiles and fashion Oriole Cullen said “Unbridled imagination and endless creativity, combined with the unrivaled technical skills of the Dior Haute Couture ateliers, created fantastical garments and fashion shows on a scale that consistently surpassed anything previously seen in the world of high fashion.”
