The qualities

What makes a brand a luxury brand?

  • Craft and quality: exceptional materials and skilled, often hand, work
  • Heritage: a founder, a history and an archive to draw on
  • Creative vision: a designer and a recognisable point of view
  • Codes: signatures you know without seeing a name, such as Chanel’s tweed or Bottega’s weave
  • Scarcity: limited supply and controlled distribution
  • High price: set by desire, not by cost
  • Emotion and status: a story and a world customers want to belong to

Does a luxury brand need to be old?

No, but it helps. Houses such as Hermès (1837) and Louis Vuitton (1854) use their age as proof of quality. Younger labels such as The Row, Jacquemus or Rick Owens have reached luxury status through a strong creative identity and craft instead.

The rules

What rules do luxury brands follow?

  • Control where you sell: own stores and carefully chosen partners rather than wide wholesale
  • Rarely discount: sales teach customers to wait
  • Raise prices over time, never cut them
  • Lead with image: shows, campaigns and celebrities before products
  • Protect the name: fight counterfeits and limit licences
  • Sell the dream, not the product: most customers buy the entry pieces that the dream supports

Can a brand lose its luxury status?

Yes. Over-licensing, too many discounts or being everywhere can cheapen a name. Pierre Cardin, which licensed its name on hundreds of products, is the classic warning; Burberry in the early 2000s, when its check was widely copied, is another. Both show how hard it is to win prestige back.

The Ayerhs view

What matters most?

Integrity. The brands that stay luxurious for generations are the ones that never stop making things well, even when it would be cheaper not to.
