The house and its founder

Who was Thierry Mugler?

A French designer, born in Strasbourg in 1948, who trained as a ballet dancer before launching his label in Paris in the 1970s. He became famous in the 1980s and 90s for sculpted, hyper-glamorous silhouettes and spectacular shows. He stepped away from fashion in the early 2000s and died in January 2022.

What did Casey Cadwallader do at Mugler?

The American designer revived the house from 2018 to 2024 with sheer, panelled bodysuits and spiralling cut-outs, worn by a new generation of pop stars. His Mugler was sexy, inclusive and made for the internet.

Who is the creative director of Mugler now?

Miguel Castro Freitas, a Portuguese designer who previously worked at Dior and Saint Laurent, appointed in March 2025. Ayerhs found his Spring 2026 debut was still finding its voice; by Fall 2026, 80s power dressing had taken over the runway.

The Ayerhs view

Why does Mugler matter?

Because Thierry Mugler imagined the body as architecture, and the red carpet still borrows from him. The challenge now is to honour that drama without becoming a costume archive.
