Ian Griffiths’ Spring 2026 collection for Max Mara was a dance between history and modernity, slipping between Madame de Pompadour’s Rococo extravagance and the sharp lines of the 1980s. The trench, Max Mara’s signature, came in countless variations: cropped, deconstructed, sleeveless, or blooming at the shoulders with petal-like folds. Suits were cut with precision, while pencil skirts sprouted gauzy crests that gave them a surreal, underwater lightness. Rococo flourishes arrived in delicate organza layers, floral chiffons, and frilled accents, but Griffiths kept them in check with structure and restraint.

What tied much of it together was the recurring black belt, sometimes a slim elastic strap cinching the waist, sometimes almost harness-like. It cut through the froth with a modern edge, grounding the fantasy while adding a hint of toughness. The effect was subtly sexy, bare shoulders, open backs, and cropped tops that felt daring but never gratuitous.

In the end, this was Max Mara opening up to whimsy without abandoning its roots. And I loved every minute of it.
