LaQuan Smith closed out New York Fashion Week with his signature drama, sex appeal, and edge. While it wasn’t my favorite of his shows, it still delivered the kind of fire and spectacle only he knows how to bring. Inspired by Lara Croft’s mix of danger and allure, the collection was a reminder of why Smith is New York’s go-to for glamour with grit.
The show opened with sheer bodysuits, leather laced from every angle, and floor-sweeping chiffon—all shown against the backdrop of turbocharged sports cars at Manhattan’s Classic Car Club. It felt unapologetically New York: glamorous, dangerous, and a little over the top. His beadwork shone, from a mock-neck column gown made of wood and turquoise beads to minis dripping with hand embroidery. Those artisanal touches balanced out the sexier, club-ready pieces.
Smith also experimented with tailoring, pairing sheer tops with cigarette pants and even introducing pinstripes. These looks hinted at a more relatable side to his designs, though he made clear he won’t be straying far from the daring DNA his brand is built on.
In the end, the collection was pure LaQuan—provocative, dramatic, and designed for women who want to own the room. Even when he’s not at his absolute peak, Smith’s shows still feel like an event, and this one kept that energy alive.
