This was a farewell. From their first airy, feminine show in 2017 to this dark, moody, and rebellious collection, the Meiers have taken Jil Sander on a fascinating journey. Right from the start, the atmosphere was charged. The venue was draped in black velvet, the floor equally dark—setting the stage for what was to come. The show opened with striking looks: spiky black fringe embellishing trench coats, strapless dresses, and sharply tailored suits. Military-inspired details, faux-fur accents, and structured kilts reinforced the collection’s bold and defiant tone. It was as if the Meiers were dressing their models for battle—perhaps a metaphor for the challenges of the fashion industry itself.
Despite the heavy, punk-infused aesthetic, glimpses of softness shone through. Delicate floral-print silks, dip-dyed from bright yellow to black, added an almost poetic contrast to the tougher elements. A short-sleeved A-line dress in this fabric was particularly memorable—an unconventional yet striking choice for a black-tie event. Meanwhile, a turquoise fur coat and a blush-pink satin jacket injected just the right amount of playfulness into an otherwise sombre palette.
The collection was a reminder of how much the Meiers have evolved at Jil Sander. What began as a study in minimalism and quiet femininity has transformed into something far edgier—punk, yet still elegant. Their gender-fluid approach to tailoring also reflected a broader industry shift.
By the end of the show, the anticipation surrounding their rumored exit had become reality. A press release confirmed that this was, in fact, their final collection for Jil Sander. Their final bow, dressed in head-to-toe black, was understated yet emotional. The duo’s legacy at the brand is undeniable—they revitalized Jil Sander with their own unique language, blending sharp precision with artistic rebellion. With Lucie and Luke Meier’s departure, their final collection for the brand was a closing statement, marking the end of an era. And quite an era it was.
