This a powerful start to New York Fashion Week, with a fresh, forward-thinking approach. As he celebrates a decade in the industry, Maxwell took a step beyond his early reputation for glamorous gowns and into the realm of refined American sportswear.

The collection exuded confidence, as models strutted in menswear-inspired button-downs, belted trousers, and double-lapel leather jackets. The outerwear was especially striking, with maxi coats featuring voluminous attached scarves that draped effortlessly over the shoulders. These details spoke to Maxwell’s evolving aesthetic.

While it would have been easy to revisit his greatest hits, Maxwell instead chose to look ahead. “When I started, I wanted to be the dress they wore somewhere. Now I just want to be the sweater they pick up in the morning and a really good pant,” he explained. That shift was evident in his collaboration with knitwear specialist Ryan Roche, resulting in standout pieces like chunky polo-neck sweaters and sleek intarsia knit dresses. Meanwhile, utility-inspired trousers with built-in belts and flap pockets offered a polished take on everyday essentials.

The show had a subtle nod to the 1980s, from oversized men’s dress shirts to structured blazers and midi leather skirts. Power shoulders and wrapped necklines gave the collection a polished, put-together feel. Absent from the lineup were the extravagant evening dresses that defined Maxwell’s early career.
