This was an exploration of contrasts, blending romance with darkness, softness with edge, and utilitarian grit with delicate beauty. Drawing inspiration from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein—a theme she began with her menswear collection—Prada took us on a journey through the “Anatomy of Romance,” creating a world where love and fear coexist in every stitch and seam.
The show’s setting mirrored this duality: a stark industrial runway with glowing lightbulbs, evoking the story’s gothic origins. The soundtrack blended hauntingly reimagined love songs, including a violin cover of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” and Snow White’s “Some Day My Prince Will Come.” It set the tone for a collection that felt both fairytale-like and eerily unsettling.
Prada’s hallmark ability to combine opposing ideas shone throughout. Romantic details like lace, rosettes, and glittery red shoes were juxtaposed with military-inspired jackets, chunky boots, and structured cuts. Standout looks included an off-the-shoulder wool party dress with oversized pockets and a slouchy black trouser suit cinched with a masculine clasp. The addition of 3D roses—wilted, as if touched by time—symbolized love’s fragility and endurance.
The padded shoulders and metal details were clear nods to the story’s monster, while soft, ruched fabrics brought a sensuality that grounded the gothic elements.
Accessories were quintessential Prada. Frame purses, satin handbags, and clunky loafers with gold buckles offered commercial appeal, while lightning bolt-adorned pumps and floral earrings added a touch of whimsy. The Linea Rossa pieces, with their sport-meets-military vibe, ensured something for the everyday wardrobe.
Fear exists in love because it thrives on vulnerability—the risk of loss, the weight of longing—but it is this same vulnerability that makes love extraordinary. Prada’s juxtaposition of delicate lace with rugged military jackets, or wilting roses with structured cuts, celebrates this tension. Instead of fleeing from it, the collection invites us to embrace the duality, finding beauty in fragility and strength in fear.
