Irere, was an ambitious blend of storytelling and sartorial artistry. Through three distinct acts—shipwrecked pirates, somber conquistadors, and vibrant birds of paradise—McQueen wove a tale of survival and transformation, inspired by the Age of Discovery and the lush Amazon rainforest.
The show opened with shipwrecked pirates emerging from the chaos of the sea. Models, styled with smeared makeup and wet hair, wore ruffled tops, leather corsets, and distressed fabrics, evoking Elizabethan adventurers battered by waves. The standout look was the “oyster dress,” a masterpiece of layered organza resembling a deconstructed seashell—a poetic nod to survival amidst turmoil.
The second phase shifted into darker territory, with models donning black ensembles inspired by Spanish and Portuguese conquistadors. Snake-printed and laser-cut details added a menacing edge. While this section felt visually cohesive, it lacked the vibrancy that defined McQueen’s storytelling.
Then came the grand finale: a burst of color and life inspired by the Amazon’s flora and fauna. Feathered headpieces and vibrant dresses mimicked tropical birds, with a breathtaking gown featuring rainbow tulle ruffles stealing the show. Transparent block-heeled shoes, complete with butterflies inside, added whimsical charm. The mood was celebratory—a metamorphosis from chaos to beauty.
This stripped-down approach marked a departure from McQueen’s famously macabre theatrics, revealing a more romantic and introspective side to his design.
Irere was a journey of contrasts: chaos and beauty, survival and rebirth. McQueen’s masterful craftsmanship, from the historical nods to the intricate detailing, was evident throughout showcasing chiffon dresses, tie-dye jumpsuits, and boleros adorned with feather motifs.
