The runway, flooded with several inches of black-dyed water to evoke crude oil, set the stage for a powerful commentary on the intersection of Middle Eastern culture and Western influence. True to McQueen’s penchant for blending art and controversy, the collection balanced aggression, beauty, and rebellion.
The clothing was as complex as the themes it explored. The collection showcased McQueen’s exceptional tailoring and ability to reinterpret classic garments. Traditional Middle Eastern attire, such as the burqa, yashmak, and harem pants, was given a modern twist. Harem pants were reimagined with fitted ankles and paired with sharp frock coats, while Islamic veils inspired intricate face coverings. The standout chainmail yashmak, designed by Shaun Leane, epitomized McQueen’s knack for dramatic yet wearable artistry—it shimmered with aluminum plates and Swarovski crystals, making it both delicate and powerful.
Sportswear elements added an unexpected edge. Boxing shorts adorned with faux-Arabic script, football jerseys with crescent moons, and leather harnesses gave the collection an urban, athletic feel. Tailored suits with embroidered details and draped dresses in lightweight jersey highlighted McQueen’s versatility. The palette of deep black, vibrant red, and metallics was striking, with brocade fabrics, leather embroidery, and metallic paillettes enhancing the richness. Accessories played a key role, from coin-studded headdresses to body-conscious silhouettes accented with bells and ribbons. A bed of nails rising from the water highlighted the danger and struggle faced by women fighting for freedom.
McQueen’s designs oscillated between concealing and revealing the body, a sharp contrast that highlighted cultural tensions. Even McQueen’s cheeky exit, where he revealed American flag boxer shorts, hinted at Western dominance and its complex relationship with the East.
