Pier Paolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri’s debut collection for Valentino marked a respectful nod to the brand’s rich heritage. Showcased in the iconic Sorbonne and endorsed by Valentino Garavani himself, the collection leaned heavily on the house’s classic codes. Cream suits with sixties-inspired collars, draped red gowns, fan-pleated coats, and crystal-embroidered ensembles paid homage to La Dolce Vita-era elegance.
While the craftsmanship and attention to detail were impeccable, the collection played it safe, feeling more archival than groundbreaking. The plated drape roses and soft pleats stood out as the most memorable elements.
While the collection leaned heavily on Valentino’s archives, with a more traditional aesthetic, it felt like a respectful nod to the house’s legacy. In hindsight, this was a solid first step for the duo. They honored the roots of the brand while beginning to carve out their own creative vision. At the time, Valentino was still synonymous with a more classic, old-school approach, and this collection reflected that era beautifully.
