Jean Paul Gaultier, born on April 24, 1952, is a revolutionary French fashion designer known for his avant-garde approach and provocative designs. His career began in the 1970s, leading to the launch of his own label in 1982. Gaultier is celebrated for iconic creations such as the cone bra worn by Madonna during her 1990 “Blond Ambition” tour and the male skirt, which challenged traditional gender norms in fashion. His work includes memorable costumes for films like The Fifth Element and The City of Lost Children. Gaultier’s legacy is marked by his commitment to diversity and inclusivity, reshaping fashion narratives and inspiring future generations.
He closed a remarkable chapter of his career with his final Spring 2020 haute couture show. Marking 50 years in the industry, the designer bid farewell with a dazzling spectacle at the Théatre du Châtelet, blending nostalgia, artistry, and celebration. Known for pushing boundaries, Gaultier’s last collection was a love letter to his signature themes and an ode to sustainability.
The 172-look collection showcased his iconic motifs: corsets, sailor stripes, and androgynous designs reimagined with a playful twist. A trench coat that morphed into a swimsuit, multicolored tulle gowns in camouflage patterns, and a catsuit crafted from men’s ties highlighted his creativity. His legendary cone bras and corsetry appeared in fresh forms, with ethereal, embroidered dresses and vibrant tribal-inspired designs adding a global flair. Gaultier embraced upcycling, transforming archival pieces into new creations. Over 700,000 Swarovski crystals added sparkle, while layered tulle, bodices, and unconventional fabric mixes amplified the theatricality.
The runway was a star-studded affair, featuring supermodels like Bella and Gigi Hadid, Karen Elson, and Paris Jackson. Surprise performances by Boy George and appearances by longtime muses like Dita von Teese made it a true celebration of his legacy. Gaultier’s innovative approach to fashion, from championing diversity to redefining gender norms, leaves an indelible mark on the industry.
Though this show was his last, Gaultier teased a new concept for his couture line, ensuring that his vision and creativity will continue to inspire generations to come.
