Adrian Appiolaza’s Spring/Summer 2025 collection for Moschino is a complex yet playful exploration of fashion’s subcultural landscapes. In his third season, Appiolaza draws heavily on the house’s iconic wit while introducing fresh narratives inspired by his vast fashion knowledge. The collection opens with draped, all-white ensembles, evoking the playful and rebellious spirit of Franco Moschino, referencing the founder’s process of wrapping fabric around mannequins. From this nod to the past, the collection evolves into a tour of fashion’s cultural icons, blending punk, grunge, and polished tailoring.

The collection’s accessories, including bold slogans and whimsical objects like detergent-shaped bags, balance satire and style, making a statement while maintaining Moschino’s signature humor. Highlights include deconstructed little black dresses and outerwear crafted from shoelaces.

Appiolaza’s mastery of detail is evident in his ability to seamlessly weave together elements from various fashion eras. From the punk-inspired pearls to the grunge-inspired knits, each piece feels meticulously curated. However, the abundance of references can sometimes create a sense of visual overload, making it difficult to fully appreciate the individual elements.

The collection’s emphasis on nostalgia is both a strength and a potential weakness. While the nods to Franco Moschino’s iconic designs are a welcome homage, the reliance on past trends might limit the collection’s originality. Appiolaza’s ability to reimagine these classic elements in a contemporary context is impressive, but it remains to be seen if he can strike a balance between nostalgia and newness.
