Issey Miyake’s collection draws inspiration from the art of papermaking, particularly the Japanese washi paper. Held in a serene glass-walled pavilion at Parc Floral de Paris, the setting mirrored the calming qualities of the material, creating a tranquil ambiance for guests seated on stools made from compressed paper cylinders, a nod to the brand’s sustainable pleating process.
The collection’s designs took paper as their central theme, exploring its texture and the delicate balance between structure and fluidity. Opening looks featured fabrics reminiscent of damp paper, with semi-transparent garments that shimmered like wet parchment. This was followed by creations in washi-paper blends, where Satoshi Kondo used hemp and silk-rayon fabrics to craft angular yet flexible silhouettes, honoring both the art of origami and the rich history of kamiko, traditional paper clothing.
Kondo’s mastery of fabric manipulation was evident in the twisted, pleated, and body-hugging garments that wrapped models in paper-like folds, creating a dynamic interplay between control and movement. Delicate pressed flower prints on silk and the use of washi in bags further emphasized the collection’s reverence for nature and craft.
The collection’s exploration of paper extended beyond its aesthetic qualities. It was a meditation on the material’s history, its cultural significance, and its enduring impact on human life. The garments were not merely pieces of clothing; they were wearable works of art that invited contemplation.
