Demna Gvasalia’s Balenciaga collection was a nostalgic journey through his childhood, drawing inspiration from his grandmother’s kitchen table where his love for fashion first blossomed. The show, held in a darkened room with a long dining table serving as the runway, was a captivating blend of personal history and contemporary design.
The collection showcased Demna’s signature style, with exaggerated silhouettes, unconventional materials, and a playful sense of mischief. The oversized cocoon bombers, Medici collars, and wrapped-up leather dresses were a nod to Cristóbal Balenciaga’s iconic designs, while the sheer body stockings and lingerie-inspired pieces added a touch of sensuality. The juxtaposition of traditional elements with modern interpretations was a recurring theme throughout the collection.
However, while the collection was visually striking and creatively executed, it also highlighted some recurring criticisms of Demna’s work. The repetitive use of exaggerated silhouettes and oversized proportions, while visually impactful, can become monotonous. Additionally, the collection’s focus on contemporary trends and pop culture references, while relevant, can sometimes overshadow the brand’s rich heritage.
This collection highlights a designer out of ideas, hiding behind gimmicks and nostalgia while offering nothing forward-thinking. It’s clear that Demna’s bag of tricks is running empty, and for a brand like Balenciaga, this repetition is not only disappointing—it’s outdated and lazy.
Demna Gvasalia needs to take a step back and reassess his creative direction, or risk tarnishing the legacy of one of the most iconic fashion houses in history.
