Guo Pei’s ‘Himalaya’ was a breathtaking journey through the ethereal beauty and spiritual significance of the Himalayas. Inspired by her fascination with the region, the collection translated into a series of stunning garments that were both dreamlike and opulent.
Multi-layered gowns with exaggerated sleeves and dropped waistlines echoed the freedom of nomadic Tibetan culture. Flowing silks, brocades, and organzas were adorned with intricate embroidery, beadwork, and feathers, creating an awe-inspiring grandeur. A palette of icy blues, whites, and silvers evoked the Himalayas’ snow-capped peaks, while rare materials like Himalayan blue poppies and Tibetan lambskin added a touch of exotic luxury. Flowing gowns with long trains and capes with wide sleeves added theatricality, while exquisite embroidery, beadwork, and featherwork showcased the artisans’ skill. Rich textiles and draped collars exuded a ceremonial air, with swirls of white feathers and multi-layered underskirts reminiscent of clouds.
Guo Pei’s use of the reverse side of antique gold brocades and Japanese Obi fabrics, intertwined to create a unique blend of textures and colours, symbolized the merging of civilizations and cultures. The collection achieves a balance between richness and a worn-out look, representing faded glamour.
