Guo Pei’s “East Palace” was a breathtaking display of Chinese opulence and craftsmanship, inspired by the Forbidden City, the imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties. The collection was a mesmerizing blend of tradition and innovation, featuring garments that were both incredibly detailed and richly symbolic. Guo seamlessly integrated themes from Eastern mythology, reflecting the architectural marvels and regal attire of the imperial court.

Traditional Chinese embroidery took centre stage, with Pei’s team of artisans meticulously crafting intricate floral and animal motifs using silk, gold thread, and pearls. The embroidery often transcended the fabric, adding depth and texture to the garments. Silhouettes echoed traditional Chinese clothing, with long, flowing robes, wide sleeves, and qipao-style dresses with high collars and fitted bodices. Luxurious fabrics like silks, satins, and velvets in a kaleidoscope of colours further amplified the collection’s indulgence. Mythological dragons took centre stage in elaborate, ‘out-of-this-world’ embroidered creations.

Certain pieces defied description: a dress woven entirely from gold thread, embroidered with a majestic phoenix; a gown with a 16-foot train adorned with thousands of pearls; a silk dress so light it seemed to float on air.

Driven by meticulous craftsmanship, the collection dared to blend futuristic vision with Gothic grandeur, embodying the duality of a fierce warrior and resplendent queen.
