In ‘An Alternate Universe’ Guo Pei delved into the realms of life, death, and the ethereal space in between. The collection, a symphony of masterpieces, boasted intricate embroidery, opulent fabrics, and avant-garde silhouettes.

Pei was inspired by her childhood thoughts about death and the afterlife. She created a world where angels and demons mingled, and where the past and present collided. The predominantly cream, metallic, and grey palette gave the collection a cohesiveness reminiscent of Greek statuary.

Pei’s use of various sewing techniques was masterful. Hand-folded pleats expressed the sense of architectural space, hot stamped fabric restored the remnants of ancient Greek scrolls, and exquisite silk embellished with radiant pearls, feathers, and Swarovski crystals depicted the elegance of genies and goblins.

Symbolic motifs of crows, devils, angels, spiders, and butterflies, along with nods to the Baroque and Renaissance eras, wove a rich narrative. Completely free from any commercial constraints, the couturier imagined the afterlife as an alternate universe, where light and darkness co-exist.
