This collection was Zuhair Murad’s exploration and celebration of Native American culture. But where doesn’t celebration end and appropriation began? This collection had quite a lot going on. Inspiration from global culture and countries is completely okay but with such a sensitive history it is best to be cautious and more importantly respectful. Even the title ‘Indian Summer’ feels like an unfortunate taunt. The show notes literally read “Native American culture would be observed from a fantasized and respectful perspective.” as reported by Refinery29.com. Despite the shortcomings, Murad’s meticulous craftsmanship managed to save some looks, especially towards the end. The eveningwear featured looks inspired by ancient tribes, with feathers, pearls, crystals, fringing, and filigree embroideries in white, gold black and striking red. If he just removed the theme and problematic communication, this would be a pretty good collection.
