This time it was Olivier Rousteing was designing for Jean Paul Gaultier. Olivier called it “an open letter to Jean Paul, an open letter of love,”. The references obvious but subdued provided a nice little walk down memory lane for JPG fanatics. The silhouettes were brilliantly constructed and guided by some crafty tailoring. His artful creations at Balmain did prepare him well for this Couture stint.
Some standout motifs were cone bodices, striking sculptural pieces, irresistible trompe-l’oeil prints, tin can dresses, dresses reminiscent of JPG perfume bottles. ‘Les Tatouges’ references, nautical stripes and some immaculately crafted leather bodies. An iconic moment – two fierce models rocking the iconic cone bra while flaunting their leather-molded baby bumps.
The exhibition showcased Gaultier’s legendary ensembles, reimagined through Rousteing’s innovative flair. Rousteing paid homage to Gaultier’s impact on his creations and celebrated Gaultier’s trailblazing perspectives on sexuality and gender, expressed through unrestrained approach in this Couture feast.
