Pierpaolo Piccioli showcased a more relaxed and effortless vision in this collection. With the then-ongoing pandemic and its impact on the fashion industry, Piccioli’s approach to couture was a refreshing departure from the grandeur and extravagance often associated with his work. This collection offers a fresh take on couture, one that embraces comfort and ease (subject to Valentino), while still maintaining the high level of craftsmanship and elegance synonymous with Valentino.
The clothes showcased emphasized big, boxy outer layers that contrasted with softer pieces, giving a couture feel to everyday wear. The collection featured muted beige and brown tones with pops of neon – vivid colors shielded by neutrals. The tailored trenches, jackets, and tailored trenches flowed together seamlessly, creating chic silhouettes completed with gold faces by Pat McGrath and towering metallic platform heels. The garments used gentle and luxurious fabrics and designed in spacious shapes. The collection also marked the first time Valentino has showcased couture for men – it was delicious!
The exceptional craftsmanship and material choices elevated ordinary items into statement pieces. Although Piccioli removed many of his typical lavish embellishments, there remained a subdued sense of theatre. It wasn’t as dramatic as Pierpaolo’s previous collections, but the thoughtfulness of it was satisfying to watch. The fluidity and subtle boldness of this collection gave minimalism a fresh angle.
