To say that this was a legendary show is not enough, the dictionary might run out while I try to put words to describe Alexander McQueen’s Spring 2001 collection ‘Voss’. One of his most celebrated works, it is a perfect reflection of his vision. The beauty at McQueen is uncomfortable and almost disturbing but it is also real and powerful. McQueen had the ability to transport you to his dark magnificent world. Held inside an enormous empty glass box representing a psychiatric hospital ward. Models not just walked but acted inside the box; they couldn’t see outside the box. The clothes aka art pieces were theatrical and enigmatic. Erin O’Connor’s dress made up of razor clam shells that she started breaking off or her red ensemble created with microscope slides and ostrich feathers – iconic moments in fashion history performed to perfection by the ace model. The show ends with a naked woman on a respirator with moths flying around her – a directed interpretation of ‘Sanitarium’ by Joel-Peter Witkin.
Voss is Forever.
