She called it ‘The Ice Queen and her court’, a collection no fashion fanatic can forget. This collection was at a time when Burton was still more under the McQueen influence perhaps she was still figuring out her own design identity and language. I guess that is what makes the collection such a remarkable one: it has the best of both. It features the near-perfect blend of McQueen’s gloom and strength with Burton’s femininity and grace.
Colorful mosaic structures, extravagant fur trims, intricate leather paneling and infinitely layered organza were just some of the elements that added to the couture-like craftsmanship of the clothes. Some looks, all white giving off a fairy late energy, others all black are for an elegant vixen. Caged and scriptural high heels carry of the wild McQueen shoe legend well. Models were helmeted using silver hair clips; something inherently girly being used as a shield. A similar though seen in a pretty white chiffon dress worn under a black leather harness. Among the final lineup of gowns, there was also the well deserved enormously pleated ivory gown ‘Dress of the year’ in 2011. Cinched waists, metal zipper piping, embellished quilting, neck ruffs worn as chokers were among many exquisite elements in this collection.
The fur moved freely and the ruffles trains followed the models fluidly, even among the strict silhouettes and corseted structures there was a sense of innate freedom. Each look carries a sense of fantasy but not without the signature McQueen edginess. This collection represents an energy that is dangerously powerful and deeply feminine.
