This can’t really be a typical review, cause who am I to review Monsieur Lacroix and I’m a complete outsider to the 80s couture situation so I guess enjoy a GenZ’s perspective on a couture collection she’d never wear but forever obsess over.

This Christian Lacroix collection is one for the books, a masterclass in couture. Expansive extravagant silhouettes created in a color palette deeply vibrant and striking. Color has always been Lacroix’s strong suit, this collection is an ideal example for the same. This color blocking and combinations in this collection to this day influence a designer’s color palette. Necklines draped to perfection, almost shawl-like around the neck along with some actual bright scarfs. Silk hoods stand out and elevate looks greatly; this is extra intriguing since we’ve been seeing a lot of hooded and headscarves this Fall 2022 season. The circle of fashion they call it. Big poufy skirts, exaggerated collars, embellished corsets and loads of regal brocade were just some more prominent elements here.

Photographs from this collection look right out of a time machine, which it basically is. This collection was over 30 years ago, a time we today can only endeavor to understand. The collection was inspired by the city of Arles, Lacroix’s birthplace and Roman Empire landmark; the references were obvious yet captivating.

Couture, even fashion was hardly inclusive back then so it’s natural that almost all looks give off middle-age-old money-aristocratic energy. Even in the 80s, I wonder how it appeared to a regular work-oriented woman, 80s was a time of change. Even for then, the Lacroix universe seems a bit dated, this does explain the fact that the company never turned a profit and eventually closed in 2008.

Lacroix was born in the wrong times, the man can create magic, true magic. His work is magnificent; the vision, the technique and the elegance of it all. But the world had already left that behind. This collection once again evokes the question of the sheer existence of Couture. The relevance of Couture is dangling between brands tying to include denim and some brands sticking to crystal-ruffle loaded gowns.

Also, this show also had the famous jacket that Anna Wintour put on her first Vogue cover. A couture jacket worth thousands of dollars paired with 50 dollars Guess jeans. It was a moment in history.
