“So , I presume you have heard?” The Commerical began with a rather ludicrous amount of suspense. After a lot of dramatic dialogues and freakouts, the frumpy man shouts “Karl! Karl is it true”
Of course it’s true

The brilliant acknowledgment of the whispers and the sense of luxury associated with Karl and french fashion. How the world of luxury looks down on mass-produced clothes and the ‘less fortunate’ (as the ad mentions). Shot in all black and white, it captures the ridiculously elitist aristocracy of french fashion and fashion snobbery. Apart from the fashion aspect, this will be one of my favorite commercials, simple yet effective with layers of commentary.

In the commercial, Karl concludes with “It’s all about taste, If you’re “cheap”, nothing helps! ” While I sort of agree with the statement ti is sort of a paradox when Karl says it. Isn’t he the man who said to Valentino Garaani post his final Couture collection “Compared to us rest are making rags”

Speaking of the collaboration of the fast-fashion giant Karl “It was great to work with the people at H&M as we all helped each other to make it a success,” he told Stern magazine. “But the incomprehensible decisions of the management in Stockholm have taken away any desire to do it again. They did not make the clothes in sufficient quantities. I find it embarrassing that H&M let down so many people… I don’t think that is very kind, especially for people in small towns and countries in eastern Europe. It is snobbery created by anti-snobbery.” He was also upset that H&m produced clothes for larger sizes; he apparently imagined the clothes for more skinner people, he commented “What I designed was fashion for slender and slim people,”.This I find quite pathetic, but so was the fashion scene in the early 2000s and before that. “I’m doing this just once,” he told the Der Spiegel, “because it amuses me.”

Nowadays when there’s a new H&M + Luxury collaboration every so often, Karl Lagerfeld did it first in 2004 paving the way for future collaborations (not limited to H&M). The collection sold out in minutes, the hype was real.
