I remember a while ago reading an article that the Royal family is looking to be more modern and that whole statement is quite a paradox. A Monarchy obviously seems to be a quite regressive albeit unnecessary concept and the sheer glorification of it in the UK is baffling. To modernize an institution built on the foundations of elitism privilege, class and luxury is quite a challenge but the royals seem to have found a solution; reportedly hiring a diversity chief.
The primary factor that contributes to the still-standing institution is the intense reverence and dreamy fantasy-land it has been projected as. Let’s be honest most of what they do is smile and wave along with subconsciously building and surviving on a misleading narrative of how much the country needs them.
Over time and recently after the infamous Oprah-Meghan & Harry interview many have questioned the sheer purpose of Monarchy. More serious issues were brought to light via the explosive Meghan Markle-Prince Harry interview; racism, disregard towards mental health issues, and just the general snobbish/ignorant attitude.
“Were you silent, or were you silenced?” Oprah asked Meghan, she answered, “The latter.” And those two words tell us a lot about the royals and how they function.
“We are very much not a racist family,” said Prince William at the reporter who asked if the family was racist. Well there is signifiacnt indications that they are. Superiority and Class consciousness are the differentiating factors between a family and a royal one; attributes that are closely tied with racist and discriminatory ideologies.
Many of the Monarchical countries have gradually moved away from such an outdated and irrelevant system hence it is appalling to see a country as developed as the UK continues to support this. Along with not only cultivating but encouraging a sense of classicism and inferiority, there is a set of added advantages and simply can’t be justified(they can’t be prosecuted, they don’t need to pay taxes they don’t need a passport/drivers license among many). It was recently calculated that between 15 royal family members the work done is equivalent to just 2 full times jobs.
Does the UK really need a hereditary chosen family that we objectively don’t know much about, that has serious allegations against it and serves the purpose of nothing more than a showpiece. I doubt it. Though it is hard to imagine the monarchy actually being abolished and it might not even be absolutely necessary if concrete steps are being taken to be truly diverse, inclusive, real, and of course ‘modern’. But that’s where the paradox lies, the essence of a Monarchy is in irrelevance and elitism.
Is the end of British monarchy close, it is happening?
Hopefully yes and hopefully soon.
