Fashion, One of the most polluting industries there are; behind glamour and luxury there lies is a ton of waste, pollution, and environmental damage.
Duran Lantink took a wonderfully progressive approach to sustainability and conservation. In a trend-obsessed fast-paced fashion environment, Lantink repurposes deadstock material from Louis Vuitton, Balmain, Balenciaga, Prada among many. Now, this is how you upcycle. A bright step towards fashion sustainability and a radical step to transform the luxury fashion industry. Though Lantink has been working around similar ideas since 2013 this was his first full-on fashion show; ‘spring-summer-autumn-winter’ 2021. The name indicted a newer approach to an old school messy fashion calendar where all seasons seem to be taking place at once
“In the beginning, we started with stores to see how we could work with their deadstock to see how we could stop their clothes going into landfill. And that was the beginning of thinking how we could create a completely new form of business.”
The silhouettes here were gender-neutral and simply sexy. The styling was thoughtful and an exploration of sexual appeal as a marketing strategy by fashion brands. Cut and Paste is a signature of his and can be seen done efficiently. Dresses become new dresses and bags become bustiers; everything is possible in Lantink’s world. The show was intriguing as it could be models walking surrounded by drones with ominous music playing.
In the future customers will also have the customers option to sell their unwanted clothes or to have them reworked for longer use via his website. This hopefully is the beginning towards a newer and conscious fashion future. After a long time, we saw a fashion show that makes us think.
