This wasn’t just a fashion show it was a piece of entertainment. Dancers and performers started the show off with an exhilarating showcase of their athletic talents and the show ended with a man holding an umbrella on top of which there is a girl on a unicycle. Now that’s some theater!

The fine line between couture and costumes was effectively crossed here. The silhouettes in this collection were the undefeated highlight. The models were engulfed in enormous clothes; searching for models through a mountain of layered fabrics is a challenge I am up for. Pat McGrath’s dramatically painted faces were quite a delight and were a crucial element. Colors in this collection had no limit along with the fabrics; Chiffon, taffeta, brocade, feathers, and countless more. Models expressively walked the runway with Raquel Zimmermann stealing the show.

Now considered an iconic show I wonder if there would be the same response if this was done in 2021. Built on some rather stereotypical elements from the ultra diverse oriental culture (specifically China and Japan) and subtle Victorian England references. This collection precariously treads the lines of inspiration and cultural appropriation; similarly John Galliano has been inspired by many parts of the world before (Egypt, India, etc.).

What hurts most about this collection is that John Galliano did it, as much as I would like to love this collection his problematic incidents are haunting and hinder his genius. All things considered, this collection really does reinforce that fashion is art.
