With only a few shows he has become one of the most anticipated NYFW designers; someone to look out for. A bit of backstory, After graduating from Savannah College Of Art & Design in 2016 he moved to New York and got a job at DVF. Apart from winning the Vogue fashion fund worth $400,000 he has dressed Rihanna, Michelle Obama, Lizzo, and Cardi B. The Vogue Fashion Fund prize allowed him to get a studio, pay himself a salary and make clothes he dreamed of. “He has an extraordinary sense of color and he is completely untouched and unspoiled. That’s why I absolutely encouraged him to do his own thing so that he could invent himself.” —Diane von Furstenberg.
The use of bold, bright, and saturated, often shiny and iridescent colors is his key attribute and he has been leveraging it very well. His retro-glamour fantasy with a more toned-down approach makes his clothes very desirable. While his use of extravagant silhouettes is all sorts of dramatic somehow he makes his clothes wearable.
This collection was influenced by the Pierrot or Italian or French comedic relief in cinema, Gaugin’s paintings of Tahiti, Paul Poiret’s work from 1919 and 1920. The collection starts with all the shades of green with a standout look being a beautifully tailored shiny emerald green suit. Followed by some looks with clashing prints and plaids which again make a case for his brilliant use of color. After a few looks in shades of white and black, came a refreshing cloud-like fuchsia pink dress. An orange ruched dress with tulle wrapped around the chest was stunning. The finale look: A huge poufy white a crystal-dotted, ruffle-collared gown was simply fabulous. He creates excitement, glamor, extravagance, and brings a sense of joy into his shows.
He talks to Nowfashion about the women who wear his clothes “Ideally, those who find themselves in the clothes I make are happy. Like, “Oh ok, this is me. Amazing!”. As the Washington Post said, Christopher John Rogers performs fashion.
