A celebration of Karl Lagerfeld at Fendi for 50 years and Fendi’s 90th anniversary, The collection named “Legends and Fairy Tales” proved to be true to its name. His reasoning for calling it that seemed a little elitist but we are not surprised, he says “because it’s a collection that doesn’t relate to everybody like ready-to-wear, this is very special for people who have a special kind of life.” A special kind of life equals filthy rich but it’s Couture so that’s expected I suppose.
It certainly was a dreamy show, with models walking on a transparent runway over the Trevi fountain. Each look was the epitome of craftsmanship and luxury. it was visible how each look was made with excruciating detail and dedication. Rightly the show is called Haute Fourrure and cements Fendi as a House of Fur. Karl Lagerfeld mixed the classic vision of couture with a more contemporary and ambitious approach. One of the most brilliant looks in the collection was a strapless white dress with flower appliques all over, with a coat dress version of the same. There were dresses with views of the forest on them in a range of materials and techniques. There was a stunning grey gown with bright orange flowers around the neck among many. Kendall Jenner opened the show wearing a deep blue short coat dress which was probably the most disappointing look in the whole collection, but she was redeemed in her second look, a gorgeous airy beige chiffon dress. The craftsmanship and extravagance were truly bewitching.
“This is what Fendi is all about. No other fur house in the world does it, or could do it,” Lagerfeld said in an interview. And I do hope this changes. As beautiful as the show was it is hard to ignore the extensive use of fur in the fashion industry and such events end up glorifying it. All I can hope is it’s ethical and transparent. Even though Fendi is a fur house I hope in the future it moves away from it.
