We finally witnessed the much-awaited Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons collaboration. It was announced in February that Raf Simmons would be joining Miuccia Prada as a co-creative director, this news was groundbreaking and everyone has been waiting for this collection.
The collection started with a model in a black look with a Prada logo just below the neck and she was clutching her coat that was reminiscent of Simons’s final collection at Jil Sander. The collection was filled with signatures from both the designers. Colors were mostly black and white with a few here and there, some ugly chic Prada archive prints were revisited. The printed looks were hoddies paired with a pleated skirt which we also saw in all-white looks with large graphic prints in black. Among some sporty looks, there was a 60s silhouette sleeveless top and trousers which was lovely. There were stunning trenches one in yellow and one in beige followed by 2 stunning satin looks in yellow and pink with flower appliques made from the same fabric and black random prints. Classic Prada? Yes. There was some Knitwear with circles cut out paired with some stunning grey pleated midi skirts again a perfect blend of both. My love for kitten heels was gratified by some that we saw in a plethora of colors. The bags were classic and Prada logo stud earrings were quite nice as well. There were a few interpretations of a more utilitarian look as well which was a pleasant initiative but comprised of one hideous black skirt/bag. The idea of a uniform which basically every Prada look exudes was also represented through a more youthful and work from home friendly collection. And controversial opinion I loved the huge Prada logos below the neckline, I think its a smart move that will appeal to the current aesthetic-centered generation. The collection was relevant and relatable and had some defining commercial moments. Miuccia Prada is one of the few designers who seem to have a sense of humor in their work, second would probably be Raf Simons. After the show, both designers came together for a virtual conversation which was insightful and super cute.
Even though the collection wasn’t necessarily bad, it was actually quite nice. The expectations I had were certainly not met. And that’s probably on me. This was certainly an important and awaited moment in the fashion industry and we expect them to be perfect in all ways but in reality, it takes time to get into it especially for two designers who have had a brilliant career individually and have a distinct vision/ideology it will take a few collections for us to be able to finally make up our minds. This collection was a glimpse of what their collaboration will look like. The collection seemed to be inspired by the past and history of their work and their brands which was done seamlessly and this was explained beautifully in their conversation which I highly recommend you to watch. If done right this can be a wonderful long-lasting partnership which I will be honest with a little hard to imagine with Raf Simons but this just might be the beginning of a new Prada.
