Dior has had many creative directors in the past. John Galliano being one of the best, he should ideally hold a significant place in my perception of Dior. But the thing is when I think Dior I never think of Galliano but just his work as a separate entity. His work was certainly brilliant and he might have continued at Dior for a while if it wasn’t for his infamous outburst of anti-Semitic comments.
After Galliano, considering his work was so wild and extravagant Raf Simons seemed weirdly necessary. Increased sales and critical acclaim he achieved both in just 3 and a half year tenure(20 collections). His work was minimal, graceful, and wearable. Raf said that fashion should be wearable, even if it is Haute Couture. As much as I love things that are larger than life, sometimes there is nothing better than dreaming about clothes you can actually wear(not that we can buy Dior Couture lol). Raf gave us that, He made me want to buy Dior which let’s be honest MGC isn’t really doing.
He gave us dramatic ballgowns, precise pants, flowers, pockets, sharp suits and so much more. His adaptation of Dior classics into modern and pragmatic pieces have created some timeless moments. Magnificent tailoring, iconic silhouettes, and Dior with a modern-minimalist appeal is what his work was about. With a thoughtful take on a heritage house, Simons showed us he can anything and everything.
