Innovative, Artistic, futuristic, experimental, moving, impactful. There aren’t enough words to describe the brilliance of Hussein Chalayan. Listed as “25 most powerful figures in the industry” by the British Fashion Council Time magazine recognized Chalayan as one of its ‘100 Most Influential Innovators of the 21st Century’.

His shows hold a lot of suspense and excitement, you can never imagine what is going to happen next. Watching YouTube videos gets me so moved and awestruck I can only imagine the feelings of the live audience. He has presented of the most wonderfully creative collections of all time, some people still can not get over. “Chalayan is not a traditional brand or selling basic clothes. We are about alternative luxury, not mass-market appeal,” said Chalayan in an interview with the New York Times.

Find below his five greatest collections of all time and I highly recommend that you also watch the videos as they will give you a better understanding and experience of his work.

Spring 1998

Chalayan told The New York Times “It wasn’t really supposed to be offensive. It was supposed to illustrate a particular kind of position. This was about the cultural loss of self.” In the finale the first model wore a chador, which covered her body till below the knees. With each model the length of the Chador got shorter till the last model came nude with just a mask covering the face.

Fall 2000

Regarded as one of the most iconic collections in fashion, the collection began with beautiful coats and jackets in black and brown and then proceeded with signature Chalayan black look. featured in between was a blue fluffy tulle dress. After beautiful show that the show is over and then four models come out they basically take out the sofa covers into these gorgeous dresses, the body of the sofa when turned into a briefcase. Blown away then another model enters and she steps the middle of the wooden coffee table and then there’s the coffee table as a skirt.

Spring 2007

Another brilliant collection by Hussien Chalayan, The show comprised of outfits that moved literally. the garments were mechanically modified, Models would enter wearing an outfit and they would leave wearing and other after the outfit is transformed using the mentioned controls. A Magical show with a classic Brilliant finale. With seamless integration of technology in collection Chalayan on has proven himself to be one of the most creative and innovative designers in fashion.

Fall 2013

This collection highlight was transformable dresses, do we might have seen similar things before Chalayan’s presentation was so minimalistic and direct it makes it even more enjoyable. One of my personal favorites and this collection definitely has the most beautiful clothes.

Spring 2016

The collection with the dissolving dresses, He certainly does know how to keep his audience on their toes. Two models standing in the middle of the runway wearing white overcoats from the beginning of the show, around midway the lights dim out and there is now a shower above both the models, slowly the coats start to dissolve and we see two gorgeous white dresses to be revealed with clear crystals and thick black stitch.
