After graduating from the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in the late nineties, Burton became McQueen’s assistant and was promoted in 2000 to head of women’s wear. Sarah Burton was named as the new creative director of Alexander McQueen in May 2010 and was given to lead one of the most genius fashion brands of all time. The brand was founded by Lee Alexander McQueen in 1992, while he was working at Givenchy (1996-2001).
Even though Sarah Burton took over the brand after McQueen’s tragic death, she has proven herself to be worthy of continuing his legacy. Sarah Burton once said that the clothing she designs at Alexander McQueen a “soft armor for women.” Keeping the McQueen signatures intact and recreating them with a more commercial aspect without compromising creativity and the values of the brand. She presented her first solo collection in the spring 2011 season with critical acclaim and hopefulness which she has consistently projected throughout her shows over the decade. Seamlessly integrating femininity and elegance with McQueen’s wild and extravagant concepts, Burton has continued to still surprise and intrigue us.
“What’s so amazing at McQueen is that it always starts with creativity. I’ve always been aware of commercials, but it’s always about the show first. The show always comes first. But the most important thing is you want those clothes to be living and breathing because we work in a world where we want women to feel empowered. We want people to wear them and think, Oh, my God, I feel amazing in this. You don’t want them to be pieces that are put away somewhere; you want them to be alive.” Burton said in an interview with Steff Yokta for Vogue.
