Chanel, I love you but no.

Chanel launched its Cruise 20-21 collection today on June 8th, 2020 a few hours ago. Named Balade en Méditerranée, a trip around the Mediterranean.

With the protests all over the world and the tragic impact of the pandemic all over the world, Chanel keeping up with the schedule seems just weird. Right after posting black squares in solidarity with the Black life matters movement, we see numerous posts of the Cruise collection, Which is just sad. The timing is just wrong. Since this was one of the First digital shows after the Coronavirus pandemic, we just expected more even though it was Virginie Viard. As I was trying to watch the YouTube video, I couldn’t even focus on the collection. Honestly, I would have preferred to see some 40 images of Vogue runway than this video that just looked like a travel advertisement. The landscapes were breathtaking, the videos were pretty but all in all, it did not feel like a fashion show and I know it is digital but this was quite disappointing.

Now let’s talk about the collection, overall the collection I felt was pretty basic(read shitty). I think Viard sticks a lot to black and white, maybe cause it’s safe. I just have to say it I think Viard I need a lot of work while making pants and I mean she makes shitty pants think I realized it like last autumn-winter collection, And the tradition continues. Initially, the collections had still decent looks but gradually it became pathetic and dull. There were two Chanel suits in purple and pink which I thought were nice but still pretty basic and we have something similar from her in the previous collections so no nothing that great. There were a lot of looks targeted for a younger Chanel clientele. The black sheer dresses towards the end of the collection were very basic, they looked like Zara. I honestly cannot pick my favorite look out of 51 channel looks which is really saying something. Though credit where it’s due the accessories specially the bags what better than before, definitely a lot more commercial than creative. She just switched some colors and patterns but still, they look nice so I can deal with that. There was a sequin bag in peach which was beautiful, but the belts were too reminiscent of 90s Chanel. The white sunglasses with a little visor were super cute and will probably be an Insta favorite. All in all, it was a bad collection.

Chanel is going downhill now, Creatively. It is very similar to what happened with Versace, after Gianni Versace’s tragic demise. Donatella couldn’t keep up and every Versace look ended up looking like a Gianni rip-off. Viard is doing the same with Karl Lagerfeld’s legacy. And trust me I do want to like Virginie bur she makes it so difficult.

Find the whole collection below and lemme know if you can make it all the way down!
