Clare’s work was surprisingly magnificent. She did Couture with such great opulence and elegance while playing with concepts of practicality and effortlessness. Whereas Pierpaolo at Valentino reminds me of Christian Lacroix (a big comparison I know), Clare’s Couture was a reflection of Hubert de Givenchy.
Her Couture was dramatic, vintage, and just magnificent, and really what more do we need. Though I do understand, as much as I loved her Couture her ready-to-wear was not up to the mark, but her Menswear was all sorts of stunning. She was a couture maestro Givenchy is not just a couture brand. RTW and Accessories is where the money comes in and at the end that weighs over the most brilliant of art.
She did beautiful work for Chloe not to mention the huge commercial value she brought in. That’s what probably Givenchy was looking for too. But three years is a relatively short period for a creative director to put out their vision. I do appreciate the ruthless business acumen, especially in these difficult times due to the COVID 19 pandemic and the strain it is bringing financially.
A much as I want to believe she was perfect for Givenchy which she was in some aspects turns out that is not the case. All I hope is that Givenchy doesn’t turn into a logo-obsessed brand and devalues creativity.
Anyway, she’s gone now so all we can do is stare and obsess over her collections. So let’s do that!
