The language of fashion criticism, decoded.

What do fashion critics look for in a collection?
A clear idea, new shapes or proportions, skill in construction and fabric, how the collection fits the house’s history and the designer’s own path, and whether it says something about the moment. Critics also judge the show itself: casting, set and styling.
What do common fashion review terms mean?
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Codes | A house’s signature elements, such as Chanel’s tweed and chains |
| Archive | Past collections a designer draws on |
| References | The art, eras or ideas a collection borrows from |
| Proportion | The balance of lengths and volumes in a look |
| Deconstruction | Showing a garment’s construction, with exposed seams or unfinished edges |
| Commercial | Easy to sell, sometimes said as a criticism |
| Debut | A designer’s first collection for a house |
Who are the best-known fashion critics?
Suzy Menkes, Cathy Horyn, Tim Blanks, Robin Givhan (the first fashion critic to win a Pulitzer Prize, in 2006) and Vanessa Friedman, alongside Vogue Runway’s reviews and a new wave of critics on YouTube, Substack and TikTok.
